Procedures

 

Assemblies:

Teachers must –

á      Attend assemblies with their students.

á      Accompany students to assemblies and sit with their class.

á      Maintain proper control of students during assembly.

 

Class Coverage:

Occasionally teachers may be asked to cover the class of a colleague who is late, absent, or in a meeting.  A request will be sent to you, which you will sign and receive 1.1 hours of additional pay.  If a substitute arrives half way through the period, the covering teacher has the option to remain in the classroom the rest of the period and receive pay for the entire period.  If a teacher covers a class for part of the period, the teacher will receive pay corresponding to the amount of time spent covering the class.

 

Course Syllabi:

Each class shall have a syllabus that includes a course outline, brief overview of the essential standards in the course, and a clear grading policy.  This syllabus is to be sent home with the students within the first week of each semester, Fall and Spring.

 

Daily Bulletin:

The bulletin is one means of conveying essential information to the faculty and students and of keeping them informed about school activities, events and procedures.  Homeroom teachers are to read the daily bulletin to their students and make it available to them upon request.  To include something in the bulletin, fill out the Daily Bulletin Notice Form located in the Assistant PrincipalŐs Office and return it to the APO by 12:00 noon the previous day.

 

Digital High School:

The Digital High School office located in the Library is there to assist any staff member with any technology question or problem by dialing extension 4821.  Teachers may also check out projectors, laptops and other equipment.

 

Emergency Card:

All teachers should have an up-to-date emergency card on file in the Main Office.  Emergency cards may be obtained from the Main Office personnel.

 

Hall Passes:

No student is to be out of class at anytime without a valid Bell High School Hall Pass.  Passes should not be issued during the first or last ten (10) minutes of any period and should not be given during period 3 or period 5.  Hall passes are available in the Deans Office.

 

IEP:

All special education students have an Individualized Educational Program (IEP).  From time to time teachers may be called upon to attend an IEP meeting for a student in their class.  In the meeting teachers will be ask to give their evaluation of the studentŐs performance in class.  Teachers need to take attendance before leaving to the meeting.  Teachers must also wait until the substitute arrives to cover the class.

 

Internet Use:

All staff must read and sign the BellNet Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) to use the Internet.  The AUP is a requirement for continuous use of the Internet and for having accounts on BellNet.  As an educator of the 21st century, teachers are responsible for knowing, understanding and following the AUP, as well as encouraging students to do the same.  The AUP is available on the Bell High School web page.

 

Keys:

It is the responsibility of each staff member to take special care of keys.  Keys are distributed to staff members one day prior to the first day of classes.  They are to be returned upon checking out at the end of the semester or before going off-track.  Please observe the following procedures:

á      Any key, other than classroom or washroom will be issued only as needed and may require the principalŐs approval.

á      Staff members are required to sign when receiving keys.

á      Report loss of keys to the administrator in charge.

á      Take keys home – do not leave them in your desk or mailbox.

á      DO NOT GIVE KEYS TO ANY STUDENT!

á      Lock all doors and close all windows when leaving for the day for security reasons.

 

Library:

The Library is open daily for students from 7:00 am to 3:50 pm.

 

Teachers are limited to five consecutive days in the library.  Teachers may return after one-week.  Two classes at a time are permitted with a maximum of 50 students at one time.  Day-to-day substitute teachers are not permitted to come into the library with classes.  Teachers must have a stated purpose for their classes.   If the class is doing research, a reservation form should be filled out.

 

Sending students with a pass

Up to 5 students can be sent to the library at a time.  If the class has a teaching assistant, he/she should accompany the students to the library.  If the library is too crowded, students may be sent back to class.  Students must have an official pass (green Accelerated Reader pass, yellow BHS pass or planner pass) and remember to only send one student per pass.  Students must have an assignment to do while in the library.

 

Professional Development:

Any request to attend a professional develop opportunity which requires Bell High monies for fees, travel, substitute coverage, etc. needs to submitted to the School Based ManagementŐs Professional Development Committee for approval.  Request should be made 5 weeks prior to the professional development date.  Request must be placed in the Professional Development Box in the Main Office.  Refer to the Professional Development request packet available in the main Office for further questions.

 

Mailboxes:

Teachers should check their boxes after signing in every day and throughout the day for messages and school communications.

 

Maintenance Issues:

If you have a maintenance issue, you can fill out a Maintenance Request Form and put in the plant mangerŐs box.  Maintenance Request Forms are available in the Main Office.

 

Master Calendar:

All events that affect the school facilities, equipment, schedule, etc. must appear on the master calendar.  Any changes, additions, or deletions need to be approved in advanced by Mr. Janssen the Administrator in charge.  Activity Clearance Forms are available in the APO and need to be completed as far in advance of the activity as possible.

 

Media Lab Room S4:

Room S4 contains computers, printers, and peripheral equipment for use by Bell High School students and staff members.  Teachers may schedule time in the lab when they want to do a computer intensive lesson or activity with one or more of their classes.  Programs available in the lab include AppleWorks, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Internet Explorer, Safari and Firefox and many others.  To arrange to bring one or more classes to the lab simply come to the lab and tell the lab manager the periods you want on the schedule.  Teachers can check the schedule on the schoolŐs website, by clicking on Room S4 on the front page of Bell HighŐs website.  The lab is open during school hours every day. The Technology Coordinator is Mr. Defer and technology teacher is Ms. Sakimoto.

 

Parking:

Staff parking is available in the staff lot and on the streets surrounding Bell High School.  All cars should have an updated vehicle tag.  To receive or update a vehicle tag you need to fill out the Vehicle Registration Form, which is available in the APO.  Vehicles parked in the staff lot or on the streets surrounding Bell High School are covered by Board insurance policies against vandalism.  Staff members should make themselves aware of the provisions of this coverage by speaking to Officer Robles.

 

Personal Data Sheet:

All staff must have an updated Personal Data Sheet on file in the Main Office at the start of the new school year.

 

Personal Property:

You can register your personal property when it is brought on campus to insure it against theft.  You must fill out the Property Registration Form, which is available in the Main Office.

 

Photocopying:

Fill out the Reproduction Request Slip (located in the Main Office) and return it to tray in the Main Office.  Please plan ahead and allow 48 hours to have your copies ready in your box.  All staff members have a three-digit account number with a set number of copies allotted to them.  The quota is based on the department the staff member belongs to and it is reset each year on July 1st.

 

Professional Duties:

Each employee is responsible not only for classroom duties (or in case of non-classroom teachers, scheduled duties) for which he or she is properly credentialed, but also for all related professional duties such as:

á      Instructional planning

á      Preparing lesson plans

á      Reviewing and evaluating the work of pupils

á      Communicating and conferring with pupils, parents, staff, and administrators

á      Maintaining appropriate records

á      Attending all faculty, SLC and department meetings

á      Providing leadership and supervision of student activities and organizations

á      Supervising pupils both within and outside the classroom

á      Supervising teacher aides when assigned

á      Participating in parents, community, and school-related activities

á      LAUSD Ethics Policy

 

PSA Counselor:

The Pupil Services and Attendance Counselor (PSA) is knowledgeable of district policy and procedure and the California Education Code.  All PSA counselors are trained and qualified to conduct group and individual counseling and provide parenting classes.  PSA counselors focus on improving student attendance, since student attendance has a direct correlation with student achievement.

 

The PSA counselor works by referral only.  Teachers need to refer attendance problems to the PSA.  You may do so by filling out the Confidential P.S.A. Referral Form or by generating an attendance report from ISIS.

 

Referral forms:

When referring students to the Attendance Office, their Counselor, Referral Room, or Deans Office fill out the Student Referral Form completely including all teacher interventions with Dates.

 

Supplies and Equipment:

Each Department Chair purchases some supplies that teachers need such as chalk, white board markers, paper clips, staples, file folders, etc.  Kleenex tissue paper can be obtained in the Bookroom.  The Title One Office and English Learners (EL) Office may also provide some supplies, such as overhead projectors.  The Library has a large collection of videotapes that can be checked out through the Library.
